Join us for a special evening of creative writing led by renowned poet, scriptwriter, and City Poet Laureate for Manchester, Anjum Malik.

This workshop is part of IOU’s This Landscape is Ours production (February 2025), an immersive binaural sound walk and projection mapping production which will animate Halifax town centre, exploring personal reflections on life in Calderdale. The writing you create during this session may become part of the final show, with all contributions featured on our interactive map of Calderdale’s most meaningful places.

Through this workshop, you’ll explore the themes of home, space, place, and landscape. Whether it’s a hidden spot, a cherished view, or a place full of memories, Anjum will guide you in expressing what makes your chosen place special. You’ll be free to write in any form—poetry, prose, or free writing—bringing your ideas to life in a way that resonates with you.

Anjum Malik’s vast experience, which spans over 80 produced scripts and published poetry, will help you develop your unique story. Participants’ work will contribute directly to This Landscape is Ours, with selected pieces incorporated into the final production and all entries used to build IOU’s lasting, crowdsourced map of special places in Calderdale.

Expect an engaging and supportive session where you will:

  • Learn about different writing forms (poetry, prose, free writing)
  • Explore creative techniques for expressing place and memory
  • Produce original writing with the potential to be part of a public art project

Don’t miss this opportunity to share your story and help shape the artistic landscape of Calderdale.
