A short story conceived and written by Sonya Moorhead, Opal’s Comet takes an allegorical form in response to the recent global and personal events.

IOU has supported Opal’s Comet R&D phase, providing studio and rehearsal space as part of our Artist Development Programme.  Through this programme IOU provides space, time, tools and advice to help individuals and companies develop their ideas and make their work using IOU’s unique process of making with art, engineering and technology.

In January 2020 IOU’s Walkway Gallery at Dean Clough Mills, will feature a display of photography sculpture and film tracking the project’s development to date.  Focusing on two of the story’s motifs – The Golden Barge and The Harbinger Fayre -a fictional calendar event that celebrates the arrival of Winter.

The display takes the visitor behind the scenes to the creation of a sculptural response to the Golden Barge, to its then two day journey along the Leeds-Liverpool canal  accompanied by musicians from Mr Wilson’s performing  the newly composed song cycle.
