Over 2 days this workshop will explore digital and analogue sculptural process combining hand stone carving techniques and the digital processes for 3D modeling


Each day will be split into 2 sessions: 

  • Mornings – creating a stone relief carving with Claudia
  • Afternoons -learning digital and 3D modeling processes including Virtual Reality sculpting, full body motion capture with Sumit

The aim is for each participant to learn or develop their skills by using a combination of practical and digital methods to create work including 

  • Learning stone relief carving techniques
  • Using technology to produce digital sculpture, navigate a 3D space and basic animation processes

Everyone will have a chance to complete a stone carved relief and a digital model of their creations, with a print of their 3D sculpture

All tools and materials are provided but participants will need to bring their own computer/ laptop and mouse.

About the Artists

IOU associate artist Sumit Sarkar has worked with IOU on a number of projects as part of our Artist Development Programme ( STTA) 

Currently Sumit is exploring new robot technologies to create marble and 3D print sculpture, and enhance this work with digital elements such as Augmented Reality and motion capture.

Claudia Dietz is an experienced stone sculptor and has studied fine arts with an emphasis on sculpture at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart, Germany. 

Her work is known for having both a purist and archaic influence. 

Many of her sculptures are in public, private and museum collections and sculpture parks around the world, including Spain, France and the United States. Bildhauerin Claudia Dietz – Krümmertierchen

 

Their collaboration was born from The Digital Stone Project in Italy, which merges digital and hand stone working processes
