IOU Hostel Open Day

13/9/2025
10am – 4pm

As part of UK Heritage Open Days, we’re opening our doors and welcoming everyone to explore the Hostel — come see our spaces, our brand-new bike storage topped with a green wildflower roof, and celebrate the creative energy that lives at the IOU Hostel..

We’ll be marking the legacy of our Artist in Residence programme with a special film presentation featuring artists who have lived and worked at the Hostel — and find out about their work now.

For our September Open Day, our current Artist in Residence, Jessie Li, will lead a unique workshop where you can capture a scent and a memory to carry with you — just as people have done for centuries.

From her time as Artist in Residence Jessie is developing Temporary Tenant, a project exploring how our senses connect to memories of everyday objects and domestic spaces.  This workshop is reflective of her creative project.

Stitch Your Story Workshop
Saturday 13/9/2025, 1-3pm
Drop in session no need to book

  • In ancient China, xiāng náng (香囊) fabric scented sachets  tied to the waist were more than fragrant accessories — they were vessels of meaning and memory. Filled with herbs and flowers, they brought blessings, warded off illness, and carried the scent of loved ones . Drawing on this rich tradition, Jessie’s workshop invites you to:
  • Create Your Own Sachet — Learn simple sewing techniques and make a personalised scented keepsake.
  • Give Fabric a Second Life — Bring a favourite old piece of clothing and transform it into something meaningful.
  • Awaken Memories — Discover how scent can unlock personal stories and moments.

Jessie’s ongoing creative question — “What does your story taste like?” — invites you to translate memory into scent. There will also be an opportunity to talk to Jessie about life as an Artist in Residence, her ongoing project work and final exhibition piece.

This drop in session is suitable for all ages.
